ROCK HAVEN is an iconic camp at the east end of Miles Pond, built by the Eastman family in the 1930's.

Welcome B. Eastman owned Eastman's Drug Store on Eastern Avenue in St. Johnsbury.  His son Irving, along with his wife Christine,  lived in New York City and their children Robert and Irving Jr. spent their summers at Rock Haven.

These vintage photos are a gift from the estate of Robert Eastman of Burlington, Vermont and have been graciously shared with MPCA by longtime summer resident, Theresa Kelsey.

Trains

Trains stopped at Miles Pond regularly, as a small mill community grew during the late 1800s.  The trains operated until the 1980s, serving the paper mills  in nearby Gilman, VT.

A favorite tradition for those along the north side of the pond, especially Burt King's family, was to flash the porch lights as a greeting to the train conductor as the train passed by each night.

Sawmill

CH Davis cleared the land east of the sandbar to form the "lower pond," where he floated logs for his new sawmill.

Store

 D. Scott operated a store at the east end of the Pond beginning in the 1930s.  It was still in operating in the 1970s, when the original building burned.  The store was a favorite destination for local children, as well as adults needing basic groceries - or fishing supplies.

The road and RR crossing used to be on the west side of this building, and Mr. Scott rented boats along the shoreline near the present day beach. The store delivered groceries to those on "the back side" of the pond, where a shoreline trail connected the camps.
